Hyten Davidson’s play, The Lady in the Woods, begins with a woman receiving a weary hermit forced indoors as the result of a growing storm. 1, When and why did you start writing plays?
I only began writing when I moved to Chicago this past Spring. I was pretty impressed with the amount of creative ventures available in the city area and was desperate to participate in anything that was artistically fulfilling. Writing was a very gentle medium for a newbie like myself since it’s a virtually free project I could throw myself into anytime of the day. (or late night, realistically)
2. What do you expect the audience to feel after hearing your play at our showcase?
No expectations but the hope is to leave the audience with an appreciation of life, a reminder of our close proximity to death, and the importance of building a union of loved ones in your life.
3. Do you have a favorite character in your play and why or why not?
Just like the character Lucy, I have a strong interest in the types of people that the character John Doe represents in the play. Therefore I do think John Doe is pretty neat.
4. What’s the one technique that helps you get past writers’ block?
I have a large whiteboard that sits eye-level on an art easel in my room on which I like to doodle thoughts and map out ideas. I’m a visual learner so it really helps to ‘see’ the story in front of me.
5. What’s something most people don’t know about you that you’re now ready to share with the world?
I’m a huge horror movie fan- even the bad stuff. I’ll watch at least 2-3 ‘B’ horror movies a week. I love it.
After being selected for the 2nd Act Players’ 2017 Showcase, The Lady in the Woods also was selected for the New York New Works Theatre Festival which takes place in early October. So by coming to the 2nd Act Players’ Showcase in September, you’ll hear it before it hits New York!
