Meet Key Characters from The Institute — Mr. Donalan, Pater Lingua

The young men you’ll meet in The Institute, the 2nd Act Players‘ fall world premiere, are shaped by the faculty members they encounter during their four years in the school. A parade of faculty members confronts them during their freshman year and then reappears throughout their turbulent years in the Catholic, military school.

Pater Lingua is their freshman Latin teacher and also teaches other languages throughout their time there. The Institute in the 1960s still offered what was considered a classical education, which meant studying Latin and/or ancient Greek. Why study such dead languages? Scott Stockman will be portraying Pater Lingua, as well as playing Shamus O’Malley, one of the four main characters of the play.

Mr. Donalan is the young men’s freshman history teacher and he continues to teach history classes throughout their time at the school. His methods are a bit unorthodox, come see how the boys react.

Donalan, as well as playing Danny Smith, one of the four cadets.

 

The Pater Lingua character is based on several language teachers at the high school that Institute author John N. Frank attended in the 1960s and which inspired the play. Mr Donalan was Frank’s freshman history teacher and also taught him in subsequent years.
